How much do you like it?
Virtua Tennis (knowed as Power Smash in Japan) is an arcade video game produced by SEGA in 1999 and released that same year on the Sega NAOMI arcade. Thanks to its success, the game was subsequently distributed also for Dreamcast in 2000 and for PC (through the producer Empire Interactive) and Game Boy Advance in 2002. Since its release this video game is very appreciated, so much so that it comes to talk about killer application of tennis in a short time. In fact, until then, this sport had never been so highly regarded by the gaming industry.
Virtua Tennis was initially conceived as an arcade, so aspects such as simplicity of play and immediacy are present in a more than consistent way. Thanks to the success achieved with the public but also through arcade review magazines (the average rating of the time was close to 9/10), in 2000 SEGA decided to import the Sega Dreamcast into the game on its console; two years after its release on consoles, the game will also be localized for PC, on Microsoft Windows operating system.
The player must beat five opponents to be able to win the tournament. Each match is played on a different surface.
A single match is played in which you can change all the options to your liking. The match can be played in single or double, thus allowing, if necessary, the interaction of four gamers (2 per side). The duration of the match varies from a single game to a set. Other options concern the surface of the playing field and the skill of the opponents, if controlled by the CPU.
This is the “Campaign” mode of the game. The player must win matches and complete various training exercises in order to progress in the game and unlock increasingly difficult matches and training. In the game there is a world ranking of players (As in reality it happens through the ATP points), which at the beginning of the game brings your tennis player back to the three hundredth place. By winning tournaments and ranking among the first, it is possible to move up the ranking until reaching the first place, which will allow the player to compete with the two strongest tennis players in the world, namely Master and King.
The primary goal of training exercises is not to be realistic, but to be fun. Each exercise consists of three difficulty levels and by completing the last level with a certain value of points or with sufficient time left, it is possible to unlock a new tennis outfit, usable in each mode.
